Goto first appeared in the music world in 1999, when she became the only third generation member of girl group, Morning Musume. She soon became a fan favorite, and in 2001 she became a soloist within Hello! Project.
Goto removed herself from the public eye until 27 February 2008, when the publication Weekly Shincho published candid photos of her smoking a cigarette at a pachinko parlor. On 25 March 2008 her official blog reopened, announcing that Goto had been doing dance and voice training in Los Angeles, California. She returned to Japan at the end of April, with no new updates to her blog as of yet.
On 18 June 2008, Goto's profile was removed from the UP-FRONT GROUP artist list and it was announced that she had signed a contract with avex trax.
